A Game of Chess

Like chess on a board, they plot every move,
One step toward each other, then back to improve.
He sends out his pieces while staying concealed,
She watches his pawns to see what they reveal.

No “hello,” no confession, no bold rendezvous,
Just knights on the sidelines reporting their views.
He never risks check, she never advances—
Both waiting for someone to make the first chances.

So the board stays set, and the pieces stand still,
Two players with secrets and plenty of will.
The king keeps his distance, the queen plays it cool—
And neither will say who is breaking the rule.
