The Hunter

The universe keeps a ledger, a book of every slight,

Of every sneaky gesture and every petty fight.

You think you’ve slipped the radar, you think the coast is clear,

But Karma is a hunter, and she’s drawing very near.

Perhaps you cut the line today with a smirk upon your face,

Or left a messy kitchen in a shared and public space.

You played a prank too cruel, or you told a lying tale,

And you’re quite sure your cleverness will ensure you will prevail.

But the cosmic gears are turning, though they grind a little slow,

And the seeds of chaos you have sown are starting now to grow.

The coffee that you spilled on him? It’s coming for your shirt.

The secret that you whispered? It’s about to really hurt.

You’ll find your tire is flat just as the rain begins to pour,

Or you’ll lock your keys inside the car and slam the heavy door.

The very bridge you burned last year, while laughing at the flame,

Will be the only crossing left when you’ve forgotten how to game.

It isn’t always thunder or a lightning bolt from high,

Sometimes it’s just a sudden slip, a blink of an unlucky eye.

A slow-motion collision with the things you did in haste,

Leaving all your arrogance with a bitter, salty taste.

So be a little kinder, keep your ego on a chain,

Lest you find yourself dancing in a sudden, salty rain.

For the wheel always rotates, and the circle always blends,

And the road of bad behavior always leads to wrong ends.
