Apology

Two years have turned the seasons round,
Since we let go without a sound.
I’ve had the time to see it clear:
I hurt the heart I held most dear.

I made you doubt the love you gave,
And took your kindness as my save.
I’m sorry for the nights you cried,
For every truth I brushed aside.

I kneel with flowers in my hand,
But know no bloom can make amends.
No pretty words can turn back time
Or make my wrongs seem less than mine.

I loved you then—I see it now;
I wish I’d known just when and how
To show that love with care and grace,
And give your heart a safer place.

I ask your pardon, not your hand;
Your choice is yours—I understand.
If you can’t come back, I’ll still be
Grateful for the good you gave to me.
